Pennsylvania

Make the Road Action in PA builds power for justice in Latinx communities, communities of color and working class communities. Our organizing centers are located in Allentown, Reading and Philadelphia.

As the largest Latinx organization in the state, we are deeply committed to building electoral power in our community, as well, and have extensive experience doing large-scale voter contact and education work.

Pennsylvania is absolutely critical in federal elections, both as a swing state in the presidential elections and because of critical US House swing seats. State elections, because of the redistricting process, are crucially important for the future of these House seats over the next decade, in addition to their importance because of the state policies that hang in the balance. Historically, Pennsylvania has been a bellwether of national trends politically, and more recently, the state’s population has begun to change demographically. In 2016 we saw a low turnout in BIPOC communities, which helped Trump win the presidency. In 2020 MRA in PA ran one of the largest programs in the state, which led to a record breaking turnout and Biden winning the state. More specifically, we helped flip two of our core counties from red to blue. Bucks and Northampton county, where we have been doing work for years and led extensive 2020 voter contact, voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020. A Way to Win analysis found our program to be one of the most effective such programs in the country.

Gerrymandering in Pennsylvania has created a difficult and inequitable environment where it is challenging to elect a Democratic majority both to the congressional delegation and at the state legislative level.  Recent election victories fueled by a growing progressive grassroots infrastructure in the past several years led to a Democratic governor (re-elected in 2018) and Supreme Court. This has kept the most regressive and dangerous lawmakers at bay and enabled the Supreme Court’s 2018 rejection of the congressional maps to create much more competitive seats statewide. In 2021, we have the opportunity to address the inequality that gerrymandering has created and ensure that the maps can be most reflective of community demographics and ensure that people are able to elect candidates that will represent their values and needs. In 2022, we have the imperative to win the US Senate seat and hold the Governor’s seat. The Senate seat will be one of the most closely watched in the country—it will be open after Pat Toomey’s departure—and the Governor’s race (also an open seat after the end of Governor Wolf’s second term) will be hotly-contested, as well.
